Fun but (too) short show from Collective Soul.

This is an honest review of a fan who was in the building. Collective Soul started out great, they were in a rocking mood and roared through the first half of the show. Ed Roland then started interacting with the audience, and he was seen smoking something that I bet was not tobacco right on the stage. I have never seen Collective Soul before, so I do not know if this was typical, but while he seemed really loose and having fun, it also seemed as though he lost focus on playing the set. The band started "She Said" after a monologue, and he forgot a line. They restarted the song and played it really well. They then brought on a friend of the band whom Ed met in Nashville (I forget his name) and he played second lead guitar during "December". I have to admit, the guy was really good, and they turned "December" into an Allman Brothers-style jam, and ended up the song rocking "December" harder than I ever thought it could be. It was wonderful and Ed was having a great time. The problem is that this shortened their set and they then started "Run", and ended it with an extended acoustic outro jam. Ed kept saying during "December" that this was so much fun, it was like jamming in their parents basement, that they had been making a new album for a month in Palm Springs, and that this was magical. He is right, it was great, but I could not help but notice that the set lists from shows earlier this month included "Gel' and "Where the River Flows". They cut these from the set and did not have an encore. I gave 4 stars because the first half of the show was awesome and the second half, while messy, was fun. This is probably a rare show for this band, I bet they do not bust out jammy versions very often. So while I will have to be happy with having seen a unique Collective Soul show, I do feel Ed lost focus and, as a result, I lost a couple of songs. Major songs, too. I dock a star for that. I may go see them again to get a chance at seeing more hits, but this does make me think about spending money on a Collective Soul show in the future.
